Vendetta (Blood for Blood #1) By Catherine Doyle

Genre: YA* Contemporary* Mystery* Romance.

“When it comes to revenge, love is a dangerous complication. With a fierce rivalry raging between two warring families, falling in love is the deadliest thing Sophie could do. An epic debut set outside modern-day Chicago.

When five brothers move into the abandoned mansion in her neighbourhood, Sophie Gracewell’s life changes forever. Irresistibly drawn to bad boy Nicoli, Sophie finds herself falling into a criminal underworld governed by powerful families. As the boys’ dark secrets begin to come to light, Sophie is confronted with stinging truths about her own family, too. She must choose between two warring dynasties – the one she was born into, and the one she is falling in love with. When she does, blood will spill and hearts will break.”

Ahh, this was such a good book! It was so beautifully written that it made me pause at every chapter to digest the artistry of it all. But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, no siree! It’s a dark and gritty underground world set in a contemporary setting.

“This life is so complex that we rarely get to be the people we are truly meant to be. Instead, we wear masks and put up walls to keep from dealing with the fear of rejection, the feeling of regret, the very idea that someone may not love us for who we are deep in our core, that they might not understand the things that drive us.”

Sophie has it pretty hard. Her dad is in jail as a murder and their mom is having a hard time with it all. She’s a social outcast in her neighborhood but tries to make the best of it. Then a new family with five…yes FIVE HOT BROTHERS move in. Dream come true, I tell you haha. But no good news comes with five hot brothers. Swept up in their dark and dangerous family business, Sophie goes through love, heartbreak, truth, and… possibly death? You must read the book to find out!

The storyline was so fast paced and had me on the edge of my seat! I love the brothers. They are as mysterious as cafeteria lunch meat. Graphic I know, but totally true! You can’t really figure out what they’re thinking and it kept the story fresh. Sophie was a strong main character; I could totally relate to her. She did make stupid decisions that could have been avoided if she LISTENED…but it worked out in the end. I don’t like Nic as the love interest for Sophie, even though he was a sweetheart. It’s just that Luca has my heart forever. There’s soo much potential in Luca and Sophie’s love/hate relationship; I totally ship them. Team Luca all the way!

There’s so many twists and turns, shocking discoveries and tender moments, forbidden love and hopefully undiscovered love; everything you would look for in a book. A modern day Romeo and Juliet I tell you. An amazing debut book from Catherine Doyle. I can’t wait until the next book comes out and I would definitely recommend it.
